Schwinn World Voyaguer

This is a 1973 Schwinn World Voyaguer I recently bought to convert to a fixed gear bike.

In case you don’t know, a fixed gear bike has one gear, and you can not coast as there is no freewheeling mechanism. This means you can slow and stop the bike by resisting against the pedals, and even pedal backwards. More about fixed gear bikes on Wikipedia.

To convert this to a fixed gear bike I will need a fixed hub on the back wheel. I’ll probably just get a wheelset with a fixed hub already installed as it will be easier and better in the long run. Then I’ll put a track cog on the wheel and use one chainring in the front and take the unused chainring off. I will also remove the front and rear derailleur as I will not need them. There are other little things you have to do to convert it to a fixed gear bike but you can find more about it at Sheldon Brown’s website – no need for me too go into to much detail as he covers it all.

I will post pictures of it after the conversion – God willing.
